In 1967, John Norris became involved in the record business because of his friend Red Richards. The pianist was in Toronto with the Saints & Sinners, a group he co-led with trombonist Vic Dickenson, who at the time were appearing at the Cav-a-Bob, a Toronto nightclub. Red Richards secured funding from ten Toronto businessmen and asked John to produce the recording. John brought me onboard as the photographer & graphic designer. The result was issued on lp as The Saints & Sinners in Canada [Cav-a-Bob Records].

The following March we created Sackville Records – named after street on which the studios were located – to record the Jazz Giants who were appearing at the Colonial Tavern. The Jazz Giants were Wild Bill Davison [cornet], Herb Hall [clarinet], Benny Morton [trombone], Claude Hopkins [piano], Arvell Shaw [bass] and Buzzy Drootin [drums].

Both these programs were initially broadcast on Hornby Island Radio [CHFR-FM 96.5 https://hornbyradio.com] and feature other Sackville recordings including music by Herb Hall, Albert Nicholas, Doc Cheatham & Sammy Price, Jay McShann, Don Ewell & Willie [The Lion] Smith, Buddy Tate, Ruby Braff, Bob Barnard, Geoff Keezer, Junior Mance, The Canadian All Stars with Oliver Jones, Fraser MacPherson and Jim Galloway: plus many more Canadian musicians. Music in the tradition.

These radio broadcasts are a small contribution for the listener’s pleasure in isolation. Viruses unable to travel on radio waves or the internet.
