I’ve Got the World on a String
Originally broadcast November 13th, 2016 – Hornby Island Radio [CHFR 96.5 FM]

This is the fourth program in a series taking place at the imaginary Joe’s Piano Lounge down there at Joe King Park. This time featuring women pianists. We start with the wonderful music of Marian McPartland, her trio with bassist Vinnie Burke and drummer Joe Morello in performance at the legendary Hickory House in New York City. Way back in 1953. Her weekly radio show on National Public Radio ran from 1978 until 2011 and introduced an amazing array of jazz musicians to the public; from the traditional through modern to the avant garde. In this program she introduces us to Alice Coltrane performing solo and in trio. The collection of performers continue, ranging through the Americans Myra Melford in duet and sextet, Marilyn Crispell in duet, Geri Allen in trios; Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer with two different drummers, and Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii solo and with her quartet.
End Notes:
A future posting will feature interviews of Marilyn Crispell and Myra Melford that appeared previously in Coda Magazine
